batch memberships without creating a contribution record

Hello helpful, wonderful CiviCRM community,

My organization has several types of free memberships. I was wondering if there is any way to use the batch import to create these without it recording a contribution record of $0.00. It won't let me create the membership without entering a value for a contribution, and thus creates a $0.00 contribution for everyone getting a membership.

Hi,
The batch import let's you create the memberships without contribution records, I'm sure of that, already did so. You need always to link the membership to a membership type - a free one, in the case - but it doesn't force you to create a contribution.
Try that and say more about the problem if this continue to happen.

Mine is still requiring a contribution amount to be entered, even though the membership type has no amount associated with it.

Are you still running CiviCRM 4.1.2 ? If so, at the very least you really should upgrade to 4.1.6, as that will be the most secure, least "bug-y" version of that line.

If you are still on 4.1.2, the behaviour you describe could easily have been changed in a newer version of CiviCRM.  Have you tried doing a membership import on the 4.5 or 4.4 demo sites to see what happens there?

You should think about upgrading, as you are missing out on new features, probably exposing your site to security issues and forum support will probably be limited.
