CiviCRM dashboard won't load - fixed
December 20, 2014, 08:24:37 pm
Something has changed with my CiviCRM installation. I am using Wordpress 4.1, CiviCRM 4.5.4, and the CiviCRM dashboard will not load, it's stuck at the "Loading..." spinning image. The "Configure Your Dashboard" link is not working. This has happened before I am concerned that my site has been hacked. After a minute or so of waiting for the page to load, I get a SessionExpired popup with the usual login affordances. I enter my credentials again, and my saved password is rejected as empty. This is very strange. When I enter my password again, I am once again stuck at the CiviCRM dashboard that won't load. I am going to post a separate thread on hardening of CiviCRM.

How do I modify the CiviCRM dashboard if it won't load? I would like to edit one of the files, or the CiviCRM database to remove all calls to an internet location, or to a dashlet, or CiviCRM news. If any of those won't respond there is no indication in the dashboard, and the dashboard won't load, and this is a SHOWSTOPPER bug.

Hi. Please note that these forums are staffed by volunteers and you posted on a Saturday. We do endeavor to help everyone we can, but we are not always able to provide a response that fast.

Regarding your issue, it does not sound like your site was hacked. Can you look at this issue in Firebug for Firefox and see if you see any errors? Or in the Net tab, can you see the response of the ajax call?

Sometimes this issue is due to using or not using www in front of your name--you must match what is listed in the CiviCRM settings file.

(Explanation added by JoAnne
Lobo is responding to the December 21, 2014, 03:36 pm post from P a u l  along the lines of "perhaps I should switch to Wild Apricot". P a u l has since been deleted the post mentioning Wild Apricot.)

Might want to go explore and see if wild apricot meets your needs and expectations better. If you do that, would be great if you can come back and give a recap of your experiences with civi and it and also a cost analysis. Would definitely help the community

It's several hours later and I still can't get the dashboard to load. The dashboard had been loading correctly for weeks. The only thing that's changed is that yesterday I did a member sign up on a contribution page, as a test. This really has to be fixed and I have no clue as to what to do. In firebug the only error I see is:

SyntaxError: syntax error
<!DOCTYPE html>

We are pretty much shut down until I can figure this out.

Can you enable debugging and look for a better message?

What do you mean by this? How would I do that?

I can't do any debugging operations based on the instructions at your link since the dashboard won't load.. There is no menu. The usual menu at the top is not there.

"Sometimes this issue is due to using or not using www in front of your name--you must match what is listed in the CiviCRM settings file."

This was the problem. I had not changed the path from the staging address. I wonder why it didn't break right away? I've been using the dashboard for a week without the error.

@P a u l  It is bad forum etiquette to remove a post that is part of a conversation. Once Lobo had specifically addressed the post you made about switching to Wild Apricot, you should not have removed it.

I can't do any debugging operations based on the instructions at your link since the dashboard won't load.. There is no menu. The usual menu at the top is not there.

Then access a different page than the dashboard. Your browser history has probably some urls of the view of a contact or others. Otherwise, in the url of your browser for the dashboard, preplace civicrm by civicrm/contact/search
Check on the demo for drupal to make it easier for your to guess urls if you are stuck
