Dashboard not showing up on Civi install to another WP folder on same server
December 23, 2014, 03:51:12 pm
Having an issue where I've installed Civi to another folder on my same hosting account. So same server, just a folder down.

So I want to connect to the previous database, put all the login info, no problem. Did the install. Went fine. Go to my Civi Dashboard and now I just see the example I attached and it doesn't seem to go any further than that. Why is that? We want to be able to keep using the same data.

You can't use the same CiviCRM database on two different installs. In a normal case, anyhow, you can't.

That's interesting. Because I can see the data if I go to a post and let's say, I want to add an event, click the CiviCRM button and there's my pulldown of events. I just don't see a dashboard.

I guess the best solution....and this is a guess....is to somehow export the data from the previous install, import it into the new Civi install and work from that.

To clarify, you can use the same database but not everything will work properly, that's all. Some links will take to the "other" site and some Ajax tools like the dashboard won't work.

Why do you need two installs? You should definitely not maintain two copies of the same Contact data.

Because we're launching a new version of our site today in a different folder....and possibly a different host soon. So the Civi data needs to either come from the current database to the new or somehow all the data needs to be exported from the current install to the new. But so far, doing that with PHPmyAdmin has been futile.

This guide should work for recreating your site in a subdirectory also:

I've tried that before with some issues in the past. Mainly because the instructions seem to be for Joomla and Drupal and I'm on WordPress.

What issues? The instructions work virtually the same for WordPress.

No they don't. For example, in step 6:
Copy any custom code from the original site including the custom templates, custom reports, hooks etc. that you will find in your "Custom PHP Path Directory" and "Custom Templates" path. If some of your custom code is in the form of CMS native modules then this custom code may be outside those CiviCRM folders. For example for Drupal this may often be found in <Drupal base>/sites/all/modules/custom/<yourcustomcmodule>.

So what's the WP equivalent? It's not identified here. I don't know where to look for it.

I suppose the underlying assumption in step 6 of the instructions is that, if you have the skills and permissions to move/recreate your site, you will know where all your custom code is stored.  This is not an unreasonable assumption.

If I didn't know where my custom code was stored, then what I, as a non-techie who really shouldn't be trying to move my site, would get from

is that I should search in the area where my CMS extensions/modules are stored for the folder that includes my CiviCRM-specific custom CMS modules.

I could have to do this even for a Drupal site as, after all, the word is may not will.

( BTW, how about modifying your profile to tell us that WP is your CMS.)

Here's the dilemma, Joanne. I've never worked with Civi before. I didn't install the previous version of Civi and I don't even know who did. I don't understand where any of these custom folders would be. And the instructions don't really tell you if you're a WP user. It's mainly written for Drupal folk. Which I get since Civi was originally designed for it. I'm essentially doing a crash course in Civi and I'd just like to know what to look for because right now I'm lost.

I just don't want to try what I've been doing which is to import the database over (save a few tables) from the old DB to the new and constantly find DB issues and errors and then the dashboard doesn't work or I see errors in mismatched timestamps.

I just want to get the data into the new Civi install.....somehow....

It's just too bad I just can't point to the old database which is on the same account. But based on what I've been reading, I can't do that.

I don't. That's why I'm relying on the forums.

If there are specific wiki pages that only give drupal or joomla examples, you might want to post them here along with the line/paragraph.

Most of the times there is a simple translation between all 3 CMS'es. Please do update the wiki docs once someone has pointed you towards a solution

Sure. On the previous example: http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Moving+an+Existing+Installation+to+a+New+Server+or+Location
--
Copy any custom code from the original site including the custom templates, custom reports, hooks etc. that you will find in your "Custom PHP Path Directory" and "Custom Templates" path. If some of your custom code is in the form of CMS native modules then this custom code may be outside those CiviCRM folders. For example for Drupal this may often be found in <Drupal base>/sites/all/modules/custom/<yourcustomcmodule>.
--
So that's the path in Drupal, but it doesn't discuss WordPress or Joomla for that matter. Now obviously, I'm not using Joomla but I would think it would an improvement to include all three examples here instead of, "Here's the Drupal example....the rest of you, go figure it out!"

And improvement would have been:
--
For example for Drupal this may often be found in <Drupal base>/sites/all/modules/custom/<yourcustomcmodule> and in Joomla go look for /whatever/whatever/<yourcustommodule> and in WordPress, you can locate it in /wp-content/plugins/civicrm/<yourcustommodule>
--
Now mind you, my knowledge of Joomla could easily fit in a thimble, so I made that path up. And the WP one? Kind of the right idea, but clearly it's not precise.

Simple things like that can really help us WordPress (and Joomla) folk immensely. Not trying to insult anyone, but it really would help and I wouldn't be here right now.

What I want to know is where to even look for the Custom PHP Path Directory and Custom Templates. I don't think the past developer put in any custom templates, but I'm not even sure where to look.
