Importing fields of Chinese characters doesn't work unless each field prepended
January 08, 2015, 07:24:51 pm
When I import fields of Chinese text from a CSV (UTF-8), the field is not importing unless I add a non-Chinese character at the front of the field.

So, for example if this is the start of a field:
北京

The above will not import unless I add something like this:
1北京

Does anyone have suggestions on why this might be happening? I typically import CSV files of Chinese records into other type of software and platforms with no issues like this. Any ideas?

Any ideas or thoughts on this? I was able to duplicate this problem on a different machine running WordPress and the CiviCRM plugin. I also made sure to create CSV files in both Msft Excel and Numbers just to make sure the encodings were accurate.

This is mind numbing -- I can see the problem but unclear how to solve this properly.

If you can replicate this problem on the demo site at demo.civicrm.org, you should probably file a bug report at issues.civicrm.org with the steps needed to replicate (and a sample file as an attachment).  That's no guarantee it will be fixed - the core CiviCRM team only has limited resources - but there's a better chance than none.

Ah that's a good suggestion :)

Unfortunately we had to switch to another CRM database for our client's project. So it's not too pressing right now. But I may go ahead in the coming weeks and attempt that in case we need it for the future~
