Odd issue: DB Error: no database selected

CiviCRM 4.5.4
Joomla 3.3.6

I am having an odd issue.

The website was launched over a month ago, and has been running great since launch.  Today we are having multiple cases of getting the following message when we try to access CiviCRM:

Sorry but we are not able to provide this at the moment.
DB Error: no database selected

This message appears after clicking on the control panel icon to access CiviCRM or choosing CiviCRM from the Components menu.  We click on either and it just sits there for about 2 minutes and then we get the message above.  Something is obviously timing out.

The odd thing is this just started to happen, and then goes away on its own and then comes back later on its own.

I can't seem to find any correlation to this issue and anything else happening on the hosting server.  No other websites are having issues.  When this issue is happening, I can access the rest of the Joomla installation just fine.  It is only effecting the instance of CiviCRM in that instance of Joomla.

I have also did a repair and optimize on the DB just in case, and that didn't help out.

I am at a loss.  Anyone have any experience with anything similar to this?

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

r u on shared hosting?

is your db server being shared by a few different groups (via the hosting provider?)

the cause seems be a db timeout / broken connection

Is the website on a general shared server?  No.  Is the website on a server dedicated to only itself?  No.  It is on a dedicated server that I manage with about 140 other websites.  Most of those are simple brochure style websites that are very low traffic.

I completely agree that it appears to be a DB timeout or broken connection issue.  However, since the DB is shared between Joomla and CiviCRM, and the rest of Joomla is running fine, it can't be plainly a DB connection issue.  Also, it isn't a problem in general with the database server, as no other database driven websites on the server are having issues when this occurs.

Oddly, this issue looks to be completely limited to CiviCRM, and that is what I don't understand.  It just doesn't make much sense at all.

Does your Joomla use mysql or mysqli? Perhaps if Joomla uses one and CiviCRM the other, that might explain the issue...
