Internationalization and Localization session at CiviCon Denver?

If you have participated in a CiviCon previously (in the US or Europe), or watched the videos, you may have noticed a talk on internationalisation and localisation (or "using CiviCRM in another language/region than US-English").

I have co-presented those talks a few times in the past, with the help of Alejandro, Luciano, Samuel and others, but the formula has mostly been the same most of the time: how to switch the language, multi-lingual, how to use Transifex to translate CiviCRM, and a few tips and tricks, depending on what changed recently.

I was wondering if participants of this forum section, you who are the main users of localisation and internationalisation, had suggestions on what should be presented on those topics this year at CiviCon Denver (http://denver2015.civicrm.org/)?

On a related note, there are post-conference sprints, and they are a great opportunity to push forward some new features and bug fixes. For example, from last year's sprint, we implemented the automatic extraction of strings from extensions, which are then pushed to Transifex, and re-downloaded/packaged nightly. There is also the l10nupdate extension (thanks Nicolas!) which can update translation files regularly for core and extension, on a regular basis (https://github.com/cividesk/com.cividesk.l10n.update).

If you're planning to go to CiviCon Denver, and even if you're not, but there are some topics that you think deserve more spotlight, I very much welcome your thoughts. If you're not sure on whether you should go to CiviCon, because some conferences are boring and require a lot of travel time, I assure you, you will learn more in a few days than you would normally in a year :-)

Hi Mathieu,

I hope you give another talk on this topic. I'm sure you could teach me at least one excellent trick that would help for the whole year.
Our most common challenges with internationalization and localization this year were:
  • Translating message templates (still using Smarty IF statements to get the contact.preferred_language)
  • Translating PDF letters (Smarty IF statements seemingly not functional here in some cases)
  • We would love to see job_title and organization_name fields localized - what workarounds are people using for Employee directory kind of views that need to be displayed in multiple languages?
  • Custom field values that should ideally be localized - especially for example Event page custom fields - instead of creating duplicate fields for each language.
  • Translating event location descriptions.
  • Using the API with multilingual data

Thanks Lola, those are really good questions! I have those issues as well, and it's hard to prioritize.

Talking about organization name: ever have issues where the admins/clients get confused when updating one language, but forget to update the other language? I often run into situations where it would be much better to see all languages at once (administrating option values, event/contribution texts, etc).

One localization issue we found recently:

- Translation of custom CiviCRM menu entries.

Some of our custom extensions create new CiviCRM's menu items. These entries must be inserted in english (as CiviCRM standard behavior) so then can be translated using the extension's mo file.

Looks like CiviCRM when builds the menu, always looks for translation strings in the main civicrm.mo and there is no way to specify that the translation for this is in the extensions' mo

Another issue we face regularly is the translations of dates, specially Day and Month names

Installing locales will do the trick for translating days and month names, but the format that the Date is displayed is an American format but translated, which at least in many languages is not correct.

Yes, we have definitely had the problem where clients forget to update the other language. This happens after copying a contribution or event page. They update the text in one language to change the details but leave the other language as an unedited copy of the old one.
