How to have multiple person memberships?
January 24, 2015, 11:37:26 am
One of the requirements for our membership system was that memberships could correspond to more than one person. Spouses could be added as additional contacts so they can be part of bulk email, etc. So far I have not been able to set this up. I added custom fields for memberships: "Additional household members", "Email2", "Phone2", but it doesn't really work. I think there is a way to do this in CiviCRM but I don't understand the design or workflow.

CiviCRM allows people to inherit memberships via relationships. So a membership for the household could be inherited by all members of that household.
See about halfway down the page http://book.civicrm.org/user/current/membership/defining-memberships/

We allow new members to sign up on a contribution page, and this seems to be working well. But how would a new member enter additional household members when they sign up? Would our treasurer have to enter this manually later? And how would the treasurer get the additional member data. This is part that's missing for me.

If you were using Drupal I would suggest setting up a webform to accomplish this.
With WP, I don't know of a way to do this automatically. Adding some custom fields that allows your staff to manually enter the other family members seems like the way to go for now.

As to how your treasurer will get the data they need to set up the contacts...

When creating or editing a profile, under Advanced Settings enter an email address in Notify when profile form is submitted?.  Whenever that profile is submitted an email containing the information will be sent to that address.
