Access control to view contribution amounts

I have an organization that wants to allow only some staff members to see actual amount of donations/contributions. They want all staff members to be able to see that people made a contribution though.

Doesn't seem possible in ACLs and not seeing a fine grained option in drupal permissions.

I know I could add a new custom field for amount and restrict that, but it seems then I lose so many reporting capabilities...is there some other way?

doubt that will be easy. how much info do the people who don't need to see the $$ actually need?

Eg would some smart groups on a per month basis be enough - eg i could look at Peter's Groups and see he was in the Feb Donor and the June Donor and at least get some sense of his engagement?
