Newbie trying 1st upgrade. 4.3 civiCRM cloned, now trying to upgrade to 4.5

Hi,
Since this is my very first rodeo with civiCRM, I made a clone of the production site, gave the new site a different ip number and was able to bring civiCRM up and running after modifying httpd.conf from the old FQDN to the new IP number of the clone.

I'm following the steps onhttp://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Upgrade+Drupal+Sites+to+4.5+-+Drupal+7#UpgradeDrupalSitesto4.5-Drupal7-UpgradeTrouble-shooting

I tried to go straight from 4.3 to 4.5.5 but after I ran the
http://172.18.16.66/civicrm/upgrade?reset=1 all I got was a page that said:  "Contacts Site under maintenance Contacts is currently under maintenance. We should be back shortly. Thank you for your patience."

civiCRM is running as a guest on VMware, so I restored the snapshot I had taken, followed the upgrade steps again, but this time only tried to upgrade from 4.3 to 4.3.10 with the same result.

Thanks in advance for any direction you might have.
~Chuck

update:  I edited /httpdocs/sites/default/civicrm.settings.php and changedAdminister > System Settings > Resource URLs to reflect the new IP i gave the server,  and then I was able to upgrade to 4.3.10   Happier!
