Limitations on Membership types causing a serious impact
February 06, 2015, 08:16:31 am
We are having 2 major issues with setting up memberships for one of our clients.

1)  We have 16 memberships and the contribution page is limiting the number of memberships to 15.
2)  Of those 16, all are set to auto-renew required and are grouped in 4s of 4 different durations (1 year, 6 months,  3 months, 1 month).  If more than 2 different durations are included on the contribution page, none of the membership signups are auto-renew.  If just 2 different durations are used, the read-only check box appears and it works as expected.

This site is currently at 4.5.5 and I tried this setup on the demo site.  The 15 limit was happening there too.  The auto-renew required was behaving differently.  No matter if the durations were the same, only the first 2 membership types auto-renew settings were honored.

It seems that the 15 limit isn't a bug but a (perhaps) arbitrary limit.  The other I can't tell for sure its a bug or not, though leaning toward bug.

Any thoughts, insights, etc. are appreciated.  This is a big issue for us and not just for one site.

Thanks,
Ellen

Sounds like you have a few options:
  • Work with a developer to raise the limit (probably easy) and investigate the auto-renew issue (hard to say without more info).
  • Look into alternatives, for example have you tried the membership capabilities of Webform-CiviCRM? It may be able to better handle your requirements.

Actually, I am a developer.  For the first issue, I was looking for any info as to why the limit before going in and changing it.  For the second issue, from what I understand, Webform is just new "face" for the actual Civi forms, it doesn't correct problems with the Civi form itself.

Webform integration is fairly different. It's basically a separate app that lets you build a form entirely in drupal, it only interacts with CiviCRM via its api (mostly) but does not use the Civi form system at all.

However, since your problem has to do with recurring payments, I'd guess that this might just be a limitation of payment processors. I mean, you are selling multiple memberships (some are auto-renew and others aren't) in one credit card transaction. But there's no way for "some" of a payment to be auto-recurring.

All memberships are setup as auto-renew.  The have different durations - 1 year, 6 months, 3 months, 1 month.

I didn't know Webforms used the api, I will look into that.  Thanks.

Still sounds like a payment processor problem. How could a single transaction renew part of itself every month and another part every 3 months and yet another part every 6 months, etc?

Webforms is worth checking out anyway tho :)
