unique receipt number

Total newbie here (well maybe not but not too sophisticated in my knowledge)

Has anyone found a good way to generate a unique receipt number in both offline and online event registrations that can be used with tokens in the confirmation emails (without hacking the core)

some clever combo of date and some number

any pointers would be great

How about date/time/internal contact id ?
