Main email being replaced by Billing email upon membership renewal

I'm using CiviCRM 4.5.5 with Wordpress 4.1

We are now entering the second year of using CiviCRM for managing our association's memberships and members are beginning to renew. I'm noticing that if they renew and pay online (PayPal processor), their "main" email address is changed to "billing", which is causing problems when we export fields that use "main".

What could be causing this, and is there something I can do to fix it? Something in the membership form itself? It is only occurring for those making payments via the online processor, not "pay later".

What is the default location type for your site? Is it Main or Billing?

Also, what PayPal processor are you using - there are 3 of them at least - Express, Standard or Pro?

Thanks for the reply and apologies for the delay in mine!

I think the default location type is "Main" - but how do I check?

We are using the Standard PayPal payment processor.
