membership migration question
June 06, 2008, 08:46:47 am
I am moving a client over to CiviCRM.  Their existing membership is in a database from which I can export and has userIDs associated with each member but not all members have email addresses.

What experience can you share to help us?  Many thanks in advance!

In excel construct a unique, bogus email address for all the folks without email.

I usually use {UID}@example.com

example.com is a reserved second level domain.

Thanks geilhufe, good ideas.

Say we load all the data as you indicate.  How do we notify them how to log in?  In other words, do we create passwords for all of them and send them a letter with their login ID and password?  Since we don't have email addresses for many of them, is there a better way to do that?

Do we have to manually create passwords or is that done in the import process?  If not, is there a format for passwords?

Many thanks!

Well, you'll have to separate those who have valid emails from those who don't. You'll need obviously to contact the first group by phone or mail.

You can look elsewhere in the forums for how to export contacts who do not have drupal/joomla! accounts, and then import them into those applications in a way that will generate new accounts and notifications of passwords, etc.
