Can't create new employer record when adding a contact

Using Civi 4.5.5 and Drupal 6, when I create a new individual record I want to be able to specify their current employer. The combobox thingy isn't working properly though. when I click into the combobox it is as if it only partly opens. See the attached screenshot. As you can see the all-important link to 'New Organization' that should appear at the bottom of the combobox is missing. This results in the ability only to search for an existing organization record using the field.

I've got another site using the same versions of D6 and CiviCRM, where this field is working correctly.

Any clues as to what might be getting in the way here gratefully received. Firebug is offering me nothing.
