CiviCRM for Community Service Organizations
February 24, 2015, 02:54:22 pm
Can we start a sub-board for small non-profit community service organizations?
In my case, I'm trying to develop integrated Civi-like services for a new Senior Village, a rapidly-growing sub-sector of the NPO world. Senior Villages try to connect seniors with each other and with community volunteers to help them stay independent and in their own homes. Volunteers do the kinds of things people might do for their parents and grand-parents such as explain the remote, take them to doctor's appointments, pay bills, etc.
Most of the CiviModules appear to be very useful, and I have advocated for it in Village forums. But CiviVolunteer does not look ready for prime time. Maybe if it was integrated with CiviCase, or if either one was enhanced? Or is there, perhaps a Drupal module that would use the same DB as Civi?
Also, if anybody is working on an accounting app, the Urban League has a Chart of Accounts that they say will satisfy OMB, the IRS, and the GAAS.

hi. i am curious what questions you think would be specific enough for a "small non-profit community service organizations" board. Most questions including the ones above, seem like the could be relevant to others.

Sorry to be so long in responding - busy goes with "small". The biggest difference is the problem of managing volunteers. There are modules for Case Management (close, but needs tweaking), Volunteers (developing, but not ready last time I looked - I'll probably send them some seed money), and HR, which has, I understand, ways to track volunteer hours.
As I look into this, the problem is not really in CiviCRM, but in the underlying systems analysis - there are many actors, many different goals and constraints, and different resource bases. A very small start-up like ours is going to be different from a mature one with a large budget and staff.
So I think a forum would be useful for developing the systems analysis before we get to coding. I've identified four different models that need very different levels of support, ranging from a simple list on a static web page to a highly-automated (simple AI) version that selects volunteers based on skills, workload, geography, and past evaluations, negotiates with them and service recipients, and collects feedback.
But maybe the forum belongs on the user network (Village to Village), not here. But first I would have to sell the Villagers on forums.

Rob - I think this is an interesting discussion in itself, but probably one that I can't contribute to much.

But, were you aware that there is a major initiative on currently to get a range of improvements made to CiviVolunteer - and if you have some seed money, now is the time to put it in the pot as there is matched funding available till the end of March 31st (which has been and gone here in NZ but some of you laggards are still in it ;-)
