restriction number of soft credits?

We are using CiviCRM 4.4.10, and I noticed that the number of soft credits that you can add to a contribution is limited to 5.
In 4.6 it seems to be limited to 10.

Why does this (arbitrary) restriction exists?
Isn't this against the zero/one/infinity rule of software design?

Sometimes, we need more than 10 soft credits.
