Sub-organization to inherit settings (such as Membership Types") from parent.

Hi all -- I'm looking for an alternative/workaround for an issue -- I thought this would be easy to figure out, but it turns out, I haven't been able to an answer and hoping someone has run into this issue before.

Scenario:

- 1 parent organization
- multiple "chapters" that act as sub-organizations
- static fee structure

Issue:

Because "Membership Type" only allows 1 Organisation, this requires each chapter (organization) their own Membership Types. From what I understand, this would mean that if I have 20 "chapters", I would have to create 20 separate Membership Types. If the fee ever changes, I would have 20 Membership Types to update.

Currently, I have 20 chapters, 5 Membership Types, and therefore I'd have to configure 100 Membership Types in total.

Has anyone come up with a solution to this scenario? From my readings, I heard that making Membership Types available to more than 1 Organization would be very difficult to accomplish due to the way CiviMember was built. Was hoping someone had a creative workaround.

This project is a Drupal7+CiviCRM integration.

I have not done much with memberships so perhaps I should not interfere  ;)
However, have you tried setting up the link between the organization and the chapters as a relationship? And just have one membership type? Or is that too simple?
