video.civicrm.org Project
March 08, 2015, 10:13:28 am
Hello, my name is Natnael Getachew. Computer engineering student at EiT-M, Ethiopia. First of all, I am very excited to get the opportunity to involve and participate with CiviCRM community.

I am interested to work on the video.civicrm.org site project that aggregates all CiviCRM related videos from all major video providers. Can anyone tell me the programming language required for the development? And what is the suggested technique for pulling the videos, using API from the respective video sources?

Am looking forward to hear your feedback.

Thank you in advance  :)

Hi Natnael

I need to check in to see if the original mentor is still interested in this project as I know he has a few other big projects on his plate. But the initial thought of this project would be to build a site that aggregated all CiviCRM related video from all major providers (YouTube, Vimeo, Archive.org, etc) and provided a workflow for rating and categorizing the videos as well as deep linking and transcripts of the audio in multiple languages using the Mozilla Popcorn project.

The site would most likely be a Drupal or Wordpress site that performed this work - there are quite a few Drupal modules already leveraging Popcorn that could be reviewed.

Do you think you would be interested in a different but similar project in the case that the video.civicrm.org project doesn't become the best fit? The team has been discussing how to include a GSoC project that would improve our documentation infrastructure and would explore automatic documentation from code or api (like gitbook / automatic screenshot / etc)...might that appeal to you as well?

Dear Emily, thank you for the response. The automatic documentation project sounds interesting too. What is the suggested CMS for it? And can you please provide me more detail regarding the features of the project so I can make enough research.

Thanks.

Great - we're getting some info put up on the wiki page soon (http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/Google+Summer+of+Code+-+2015) that will explain more about the documentation. I will watch that page and post back here once it's been updated.

In the meantime, if you're looking to get started on researching and practicing to be ready for the application process, the best thing to do would be to start getting a development environment set up and start familiarizing yourself with Civi. Make sure you've read http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php?topic=35794.new;topicseen#new (which it looks like you have), start familiarizing with codebase http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/The+codebase, and especially visit https://buildkit-ui.civicrm.org/#/welcome and start playing with your local set up.

I'll post back here soon, and feel free to post any more questions you might have.

This project has been added to the wiki, check it out and see if you're interested. Lots of work figuring out best systems and doing proof of concept and hopefully finding ways to tie in live documentation capabilities. It's a good companion project to new user tour project as well if you're more interested in that, let us know what you think.
