Immediately with version 4.6
March 13, 2015, 02:24:39 am
Hello, I'm new and I'm configuring CiviCRM for a sports club. Work under wordpress. Do you think it's too risky working immediately with version 4.6?

Thanks.

Using a beta version on a site other than for testing is something that I am sure most people would caution against. You seem to be on version 4.5 already. My instincts would be to wait for the final 4.6 which seems to be very near completion. According to the Civi Blog "that version is nearing its final release date".

Ok, thank you Dave.
In your opinion, the risk is to lose all data or stuck with the job?

Hi cerelli

I am a civi user and not a developer, so I am a little bit cautious about giving firm opinions on what are technical matters. Maybe one of the techies on the forum will be able to comment more authoritatively on this.

From my experience, however, I doubt that your database would be at risk. The thing about beta versions is that they still have some bugs that have to be sorted out before being launched into the world.

If you used a beta version you would have to upgrade to the final version anyway, so you would not really gain very much by jumping ahead and using the beta.

The version 4.5 that you seem to be on is very good in my experience and was a big improvement over the previous version. Whatever you do, it looks as if you are going to have to upgrade. If you install the current 4.5.8 and then upgrade to 4.6 when it is launched that might be a good strategy. If you take a risk and use a beta version of 4.6, you are still going to have to upgrade to the final 4.6 version.

If I were you, I would be inclined to use 4.5.8 and be patient until the final 4.6 is launched.

Hope this is helpful.

IMO 4.6 is stable enough to install on a brand new site that doesn't have any users yet. As you develop your site you'll want to periodically upgrade betas (which are released each Wed).
However I would not recommend upgrading an existing, live site to a beta.
