installing CiviMail for CiviCRM 1.6, upgrading for 2.0

We're generally running CiviCRM 2.0.2, but have a couple of older installs.

One has a bunch of custom code working against a 1.6.8284 release that the client doesn't have a budget to upgrade. This client wants CiviMail now. They would prefer their own install rather than the UAS CiviSMTP service that we've set up for some other clients.

Our RimuHosting support folks are going to do the setup for us. Here are a couple of questions:

I know a number of people have either had to abandon CiviMail installs or had great difficulty with it. Is the major issue getting amavis and/or amavis-new to work, or is it something else?

If we get either the official CiviMail install or the unofficial alternative working for 1.6, is upgrading this in a few months to 2.1 going to be a big issue? I vaguely recall that the big improvements for CiviMail in 1.9 were the installation procedures.

Not sure how large the contact's db is and how often a mailing needs to be done.

However, v1.9 did fix quite a few bugs and scale issues with CiviMail, so we definitely would not recommend using a version older than 1.9. I dont think the installation process has changed since the CiviMail release days. IMO, CiviSMTP is totally worth the money for small orgs
