Custom fields not available when importing contacts
March 16, 2015, 01:07:16 pm
I've created a set of custom fields for individuals. They show up when adding a new individual, but they are not options when doing a bulk import. What am I doing wrong?

Hey Thomas,

That's pretty odd.  Note that in the import screen, the custom fields are alphabetized by custom GROUP name, not custom FIELD name - so maybe they're there but not where you expected?

If you still don't see them, try replicating the problem on the demo server and tell us what you see - that'll help us figure out if there's a problem with all CiviCRM, or just CiviCRM in your instance.

Definitely not anywhere on the list.

You'll have to forgive me, I'm not a developer so I'm a little slow on the lingo sometimes. You say install on "the demo server". Does that refer to something official? Or does that just mean my own non-public server?

I made two fresh installs on my local MAMP server, one in which Drupal and Civi have separate databases (like the one with the issue) and one in which they share a database. Both instances work.

I'm trying to make a test civi install on our live server, but for some reason none of the Drupal installs I'm creating will let me log in. It's bizarre. I was having the same problem with my local instances. I had to go into the db and erase the user with ID of 0 in order for the actual admin account I created to login. Off topic, I know but I frustrated so I'll gripe to anyone.

PS. Much love to Palante Tech!

OK, I think I figured out the problem.

In the custom field group, I had checked "Does this Custom Field Set allow multiple records?" but I was using the simple contact importer rather than the multi-value importer.

Always a new adventure!

Glad you found a solution!  And yes, sorry - "the demo server" is any of the servers available at demo.civicrm.org.  One of the first steps toward seeing if a problem is in CiviCRM itself vs. your particular configuration is to see if the same problem exists on the demo server.
