Counties in Wales (UK)
March 26, 2015, 04:22:28 am
The data in the current CivicRM database for states in the UK (civicrm_state_province) lists the following for counties in Wales:

2678   Gwynedd   GWN   1226
2757   Powys   POW   1226
2804   Mid Glamorgan   VGL   1226
9998   West Glamorgan   WGM   1226
10013   Clwyd   CWD   1226
10014   Dyfed   DFD   1226
10015   South Glamorgan   SGM   1226

Current information (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_government_in_Wales) suggests the following:

Blaenau Gwent
Bridgend (Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr)
Caerphilly (Caerffili)
Cardiff (Caerdydd)
Carmarthenshire (Sir Gaerfyrddin)
Ceredigion
Conwy
Denbighshire (Sir Ddinbych)
Flintshire (Sir y Fflint)
Gwynedd
Isle of Anglesey (Ynys Môn)
Merthyr Tydfil (Merthyr Tudful)
Monmouthshire (Sir Fynwy)
Neath Port Talbot (Castell-nedd Port Talbot)
Newport (Casnewydd)
Pembrokeshire (Sir Benfro)
Powys
Rhondda Cynon Taf
Swansea (Abertawe)
Torfaen (Tor-faen)
Vale of Glamorgan (Bro Morgannwg)
Wrexham (Wrecsam)

How do we go about getting things updated, or is it just left to individual users to amend their databases? I can see that it could cause all sort of issues with historic data.

One of my clients wanted to 'see' the UK as four different countries, with the counties related to each country.  So I manually updated civicrm_state_province using my own made up 'country_id' for the countries.  But the counties are practically an impossibility to satisfy everyone, so you just have to do your best.  Perfect example... (stand back)... there is no such county as Yorkshire !!!! :D   Historically, of course, but it doesn't exist in any administrative way... but you know that.

That was part of the reason behind suggesting that maybe using the ISO subdivisions list may be the most appropriate. Counties are not required, recommended or used for post any more, so the 'postal counties' list is a thing of the past.

Ideally - I'l like to see it disappear from Addresses in CiviCRM altogether but that's not likely ;-)
