CiviCRM & APC

Can anyone share their experiences with using APC to improve CiviCRM's performance?  Performance on our new server (a virtual dedicated server) is disappointing, so would value some feedback.  My only experience with PHP caching so far has been that it's roughly the equivalent of shooting yourself in the foot (or maybe the head).

I install APC standard on pretty much any LAMP stack I touch.  You sometimes need to increase the cache size on APC, otherwise it's plug-and-play with a significant performance boost over no opcode cache.  I can't compare it to other opcode caches like Zend though - though I imagine as I start working with newer versions of PHP I'll learn!

Yep, APC made a huge difference to us too. The opcode cache built into php 5.5 is as good, in our experience (though we needed this to confirm for sure it was working).
