Mass conversion of Contacts to Members
June 11, 2008, 09:30:07 pm
I just imported a list of about 300 contacts into the CiviCRM contacts area, however, I would now like to designate all of them as Members in the CiviMember section. Is there a quick and easy way of doing this versus having to manually go into each record and designating that contact as a specific member?  I know there is an import feature in CiviMember; however, that does not work for me since I need to the ability to import multiple fields, not just want is provided in the mapping in the CiviMember import feature.

I would think there would be an selection in the 'more options' drop-down list when I do a search that would allow me to add the selected contacts to a specific membership.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi - I don't think it is a big mission to export your 300, add a column for the membership data (start date, type etc) and them reimport through civiMember.

If you have other data to import then do that through the standard Import function - having added your Internal ID to your table so that your match up is straightforward if there is otherwise a risk of hitting duplicates.

I tried this method and it does not work for me.   This is the steps I am following.

1) I export ONLY the PRIMARY fields from my contact list
2) I add the following fields to the contact csv file: Membership Type, Start Date, End Date
3) I import to CiviMember and get the following errors:

Invalid value for field(s) : Start Date; End date

Date format as follows: 6/11/2008  6/11/2008

Am I missing something here?

Can you give me a example of a US Date format?  That was the format that was displayed when I exported the Member spreadsheet; I just copied it over to the Contact spreadsheet.

OK, US date format is something like mm/dd/yyyy. If you are using excel to maniplualte your data then it's pretty easy to change. However you import a csv and need to look at what excel saves to the csv file.

when you get to the first page of Import (and I presume civiMember import too) then you get a choice of date formats.

I have been caught out a couple of times that even though I reimport a file from civiCRM that comes as dd/mm/yyyy by the time i have finished  adding data NeoOffice spits out a csv that has dd/mm/yy so i have to remember to reformat data columns before i save for the import.
