My first thought is, do you already have a contact sub-type called "volunteer"?

Please turn on debugging and enable the backtrace: http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Debugging+for+developers

Then we can see better which step in the install is failing.

+1 to ginkgomzd's request for more debugging info.

Also, I've seen some Joomla users try to install CiviVolunteer as a Joomla extension rather than a CiviCRM extension. Can you tell us more about what you did to try install CiviVolunteer? What steps did you take, and at what point did the error occur?

Thankyou for your response.

I was install civivolunteer twice in a first install looks like successfull but I didn't find voolunter page in civievent page configuration. and in the second installation show that error.

I was Install civivolunteer from adminster -> system setting -> manage extention then click tab button add new, find civiVolunteer and click link download. and then I move to extensions tab page. then click Install. just like that

Were you able to enable debugging per the article linked?

You should uninstall the extension and re-install with debugging enabled. Copy or screenshot any errors that are shown.

Did you try to uninstall the extension in between installation attempts?

You may need to get support from a developer to troubleshoot this if you can't get more specifics from the log.

Are you installing this on a server that is accessible on the web? Is it a fresh install of Joomla?

Hello, I run into the same problem, but installing the bleeding master code from civivolunteer in civicrm 4.6.9
I tried several times, also manually uninstalling with the uninstall sql and other installed references.

This is my debug & backtrace:

Hello Magnolia,
Could you use the api explorer to find out what the equivalent call returns?

$get = civicrm_api3('CustomGroup', 'get', array(
      'name' => 'Volunteer_Information',
      'return' => 'id',
      'sequential' => 1,
    ));

Do you have a custom field group called Volunteer_Information?

Also, you can't use the master branch. It is not stable. We will have a 2.0 release available very soon.
The code in question is not unique to master, so I think you will run into the same problem using a release branch.

Cheers

It returns the following:

        {
        "is_error": 0,
        "version": 3,
        "count": 1,
        "id": 88,
        "values": [
            {
                "id": "88",
                "name": "Volunteer_Information"
            }
        ]
    }

Hi Magnolia,

Just to let you know, a patch for this has been made: https://github.com/civicrm/org.civicrm.volunteer/compare/master...JohnFF:feature/VOL-171-install-process-fails.patch perhaps you could test it and confirm if it solves your issue or not?

Better hold off. I'm reviewing the PR and have significant changes. Should get some version of this merged tomorrow.

Here's the issue, so you can follow along if desired. I've made a new pull request refactoring some of JohnFF's work and making some other improvements.

I am setting up a multisite civicrm setup under wordpress,.  The install on the main site went fine, but I am getting this as quoted above when I try to install on the second site.  I have read the previous posts, but not sure how I should proceed with fixing this issue with the second site, or future expansions of our network.  ???

Thanks in Advance,

Hi Steve,
I hope you will try the new 2.0 released yesterday. We put quite a but into upgrade testing, so I think you will have better luck.

Please let us know.

Steve,

Re-reading this thread, I'm getting the sense that your problem might be related to your multisite install, and I'm not sure that the new version addresses your case.

I'm a little unclear on the mechanics here... Is there more than one CiviCRM database in play? What does the database structure look like in a WP multisite install... or at least in yours?

Thanks,

-Frank
