Importing contacts in different languages
July 07, 2015, 04:19:57 am
Hi everyone,

I tried to import contacts that are in Serbian (latin), but it's not doing it well, it doesn't support letters like ćšđčž that we (in Serbia) use.

I've added Serbian as language to localisation preference, I don't know what else to do.

Thanks!  :)

Hi Damir,

Can you check the file encoding format of your CSV file? It should be in UTF-8 (Unicode). If in doubt, Libre Office / Open Office has good CSV support, and makes it easy to select the correct encoding.

If it's in UTF-8, it should definitely work.

Thank you very much! :)

I needed to save my xlsx file as utf-8 text first and than as csv file.

But now I have some other problem, I've had some importing errors. In the import_errors file in the column "reasons" it says that most of the email addresses are not valid, also it says that I have invalid value for the field website although all websites and emails work fine.

I'm sorry maybe this issue should be in some other topic, but I'm hoping you could help me?

Hi Damir,

I'm not sure what would cause that, but seems like the CSV export from Excel might be doing something weird?

Could you open the CSV file with a plain text editor? Under Linux there's gEdit,  Mac and Windows also have plain text editors, but sometimes they might not default to UTF-8 (I think that notepad in Windows 8 does, but not in previous versions).

You can probably also rename the file test.txt, and open it with Firefox (although I use: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/open-in-browser/).

Sometimes we find it just easier to copy from an xlsx and paste direct in to a csv to sidestep any issues that xl might throw in to the mix - works if the spreadsheet isn't huge.
