Need help understanding contacts hierarchy
July 08, 2015, 08:11:12 am
Hello,
I am new to Civi (I started working for a company that is using it). I could not figure out if this question qualifies for this section, hopefully I am in the right place...

Our company currently uses civi to track our corporate membership. We want to import our clients who are schools and districts, as well. Except we have a concern about how to organize schools and districts (Schools come to us as projects from the district level and it is our end goal to use civicase to monitor our projects).

One of our plans is to import schools as individuals and create a Contact Type properly identifying them as schools and import Districts as companies.

Another suggestion made was importing both as companies and properly identifying the Contact Type in this way (ie, schools, districts, corporate)

A third idea was to import schools as individuals and districts as a household. The idea being that all the schools in one district would be under one household.

As someone new to civi, it is difficult to see the advantages and drawbacks of each option. On top of which, occasionally our projects names are different to the school name and we keep record of both.

Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated! I look forward to working with the Civi community!!!

Hey there. The best place to ask your question would be http://civicrm.stackexchange.com

And here's a hint to help you refine the question you post there: a "school" is a classic example of an organization sub-type. In general if it is an institution of any sort it should be type (or a sub-type of) Organization. Only if it has approximately two arms and two legs should it be an Individual. :)
Try asking your question on the new CiviCRM help site.
