how to define the membership type without an organization?

According to the documentation, you have to define an organization, then assign IT a membership type (student, annual, lifetime,...).

What if I want to define individuals a membership, which makes more sense to me.  How do I do that without first setting up an organization for every member?

How does this get used with membership renewals?

Which documentation page are you referring to specifically?

I may be reading your question wrong, so I will start with a question. Are you saying that you are running a site where every organization needs to have its own membership type? As in, people can choose to be a member of any of the organizations in CiviCRM? I don't know that I've ever even considered this one before.

Or are you saying you want all your CiviCRM contacts to be able to have memberships to your organization or to a few different organizations? If so:

I *think* that you might be confused by the difference of membership types and memberships in general. So the whole idea of a "membership" is that people sign up and become members of an organization -- aka YOUR organization. So you create at least 1 membership type that people can sign up for.

On the membership type page, where you put in "membership organization" you should put in your organization.

Then, if you are giving people memberships manually, you could go to any individual's record and click the "membership" tab. You can then give them a "new" membership, where you select the "type" that you just created.

If you want people to be able to sign themselves up, then you need to configure an actual membership sign up page. So you would go to CiviCRM > CiviMember >

Then click the link that says "configure Online Contribution Pages which include membership sign-up here." Then you will set up a sign-up page for the membership type.

It sounds like from your question that you thought every individual needs their own membership type, when in fact a membership type just includes the details on how much membership costs, when the membership will start/end, etc. Does this make sense?

In terms of membership renewals, I am not really sure what you need to know...If you create a membership sign up page, and someone who already has a membership comes to it, it will automatically know that (if they are logged in) and give them the "renewal" version of the page instead.

You're right, I misunderstood the documentation.  I want members, they sign up using the membership renewal, to stipulate the type of membership; ie., Lifetime, student,sponsor,....

And your instructions have made that clear, I think.

There is an existing membership renewal form and I would simply change the membership types THERE to reflect the type.
