Bounces with emails with address in certain formats
June 17, 2008, 02:53:41 pm
I was looking at the bounces in a recent mailing and saw several with the bounce reason given as "Badly formatted address". The addresses look good but there does seem to be a pattern. For privacy reasons, I cannot list them here.

They are all of the format firstname.lastname@domainname.xx where the xx may be ca, jp, mil, ml

They could also have certain country domains like my or cz, such as firstname.lastname@somedomain.cz

I have posted this in the CivSMTP child forum and Shane says it is not something that CiviSMTP is doing so maybe it is a problem that exists in CiviMail.

Can you send an email to them from "Send Email to Contacts" within CiviCRM and see if that works or bounces? Can u send them an email via your regular email client

I have not tested this myself. The country administrators reporting the problem are saying they can.

I was thinking of setting up a test with an address in my own domain like dennis.gray at fareast dot com dot au to test it out but I don't think the .au domain is having this kind of problem.

There does seem to be a pattern, though.

I'll try to set up this test over the weekend.

As far as I know, mail sent through other email clients and via Drupal is handled correctly.

I've been working on other things and have not set up the test yet.

I was only able to test the format firstname.lastname@mydomain.com.au

The mail went through so I have to say I cannot duplicate this easily. I haven't had any reports yet recently so maybe it was a one-off but that seems strange too.

We had another mailing go out and got three bounces with "badly formed addresses". These were addressed to

name@ku.edu.tr

There were also two that bounced formatted like:

name@khas.edu.tru

I can't replicate the problem easily so I can only report when it happens.

Do you have access to the mailserver’s logs and can check the exact SMTP bounce code (or get it from the bounce message)?

Well, this is not a valid domain in the first place (yet…).

name@khas.edu.tr is the correct format

That was a typo. tr is supposed to be Turkey

We are using CiviSMTP. Shane says he does not see any problem in the logs.

Ok, so both ku.edu.tr and khas.edu.tr have MX records, so should properly handle email.

Did the bounce message (about ‘badly formed addresses’) come from your own server, or the servers at the other end? Can you quote any of these messages (or forward to me at shot@civicrm.org)?

The message I am quoting is from CiviCRM. I'll contact UAS to see if I can get the details from the log

Ok, this is very strange, then. Are you sure the ‘name’ parts of these addresses do not contain anything that could make CiviCRM filters think it’s not a valid address?

here is an example of a from address that is badly formatted.  it seems like it is related to the civimail from address.

==========================================
[shane@civismtp ~]# telnet  smtp-gateway-mx1.toll.com.au 25

Trying 203.9.121.10...

[shane@civismtp ~]# telnet  smtp-gateway-mx1.toll.com.au 25
Trying 203.9.121.10...
Connected to smtp-gateway-mx1.toll.com.au (203.9.121.10).
Escape character is '^]'.
220 mx1.toll.com.au SCM3200/SMTP Ready.
helo civismtp.uas.coop
250 Requested mail action okay, completed.
mail from:<bounce.1.3043.1715255.7d0f22080aed036feeff05c141681dc1534177f1-person=toll.com.au@lists.democratsabroad.org>
501 Syntax error - Badly formatted address.
==========================================

I tried this with a different smaller from address and all was ok.  the error code 501 I suppose is because of the long civimail address.

however, the protocol is specced so that the reverse-path can be up to 256 chars.  we do not have anywhere near 256 chars in that email address so this appears to be misconfiguration of the receiving mail server

http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2821

I thought I had heard some additional stuff here in the forum in the past about this but do not see anything with a search.

dennis,  you might want to get a hold of some these folks directly and tell them they need to contact their mail provider about this.

This might be a case of CRM-2574 (the above address is indeed longer than 64 characters), which is fixed in 2.1.
