Is 4.4.x dead?
May 12, 2016, 08:23:25 am
I'm confused about the status of the 4.4.x branch - last I knew, it was the LTS release, and it was getting updated as recently as February with 4.4.21 - but now on the downloads page, I see that 4.6.x is the official LTS release. But I can't find anything announcing the change, or stating that 4.4.21 is the end of the 4.4.x branch.

So is the state of things:

a) The CiviCRM team fails at making announcements, 4.6.x is the new LTS and 4.4.x is dead?
b) I fail at finding announcements (link please!), and 4.6.x is the new LTS and 4.4.x is dead?
c) 4.6.x is now preferred, but 4.4.x will still be patched for the time being?
d) Other?

Hi,

Here is the 4.6 LTS announcement:
https://civicrm.org/blog/eileen/new-year-new-lts

According to stats [1], ~ 1540 sites still use 4.4 (out of 10.8k reported installs, 14%), which is still significative, so if there are patches to help improve 4.4 (security or bugfix), they are usually accepted. However, it's not officially part of the release cycle, and someone needs to commit resources to it for a new release to happen. Most resources are already spread pretty thin.

At this point, I would strongly encourage to upgrade to CiviCRM 4.6 (or even 4.7, since there are no 4.8 plans at this point, it will stay 4.7 for some time). I have been doing a lot of 4.4->4.7 upgrades of sites with a lot of data and many extensions, and so far so good.

Thanks for that! I spent almost twenty minutes looking for an announcement this morning and couldn't find anything...

P.S. - I'm jealous of your 4.4 -> 4.7 success. The only install I've tried that with got stuck halfway and had to be rolled back, and it was as simple a site as could be. :(

I noticed some reports of errors towards the 4.7.5 - 4.7.6 upgrade regarding "foreign keys", ex:
https://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-18526

Does your upgrade manage to get up to that version, or does it fail earlier?

Do you have the error message of the error? (it should be logged in files/civicrm/ConfigAndLog/[...].log).

Although I guess this is a topic best discussed on: http://civicrm.stackexchange.com/

If it fails between 4.4 and 4.7.x, we should make sure to fix the issue (if possible), and if it's the 4.7.5 - 4.7.6 issue, maybe better to wait until 4.7.8.
