Import Problem - Mapping Step Skipped
June 20, 2008, 09:51:50 am
We're moving data from a laptop-based PIM to a Joomla+CiviCRM setup.

I've exported our data and broken it down into small files to keep below the 2M ceiling for imports.

Last weekend I got about half of one of these smaller files imported, with a slew of errors, and saved that first map as Map1.

After cleaning up the source file to correct problems they caused CiviCRM, I tried to import the revised file, and get an error message that the file has changed substantially (which is true).

No matter what steps I take (using original Map1, or modifying it and saving it, or trying to import without mapping) the system skips over the field matching step in the import wizard, so I can't continue to refine my map.  Any ideas how to get back to the matching function?

TIA,

R

I just tried this on our public 2.0.4 demo - and I'm not seeing these issues...

I mapped an import file and saved the mapping
Then I uploaded a different file and clicked Load Mapping to load my previously saved mapping
I got the "your file has changed..." warning
Then I selected "Save as New Mapping" - gave it a new name and went on with the import w/o a problem ....

Can you try and recreate the "skip field matching" state on the public demo...

Beyond figuring out the bug - have you tried going into Administer CiviCRM >> Configure >> Import/Export Mappings - and deleting the existing saved mapping? I would think this might clear up the problem behavior ...

Dave -

I tried your suggest approach to no avail. In the process I realized I my initial problem description was off a little.

After selecting the cvs file targeted for import, I do get a screen from Step 2 Mapping, which asks me to confirm the first two lines (one of which is the column heading from the cvs file). The highlighted fields is a notes field from ACT! our current PIM, and CiviCRM correctly associates that with the CiviCRM field "notes."

Irrespective of what I do here (continue, save a new map layout or load the previously successful map I had used before cleaning up the file, and then deleting all maps as you suggested) I jump to Step 3 of the Import wizard which is where all the records are reflected as errors.

How do I get the the screen that provides me with CiviCRM's initial attempt to associate fields between the two schemae?

I know I need to clean up this initial attempt to map the old records, but am not provided the opportunity to do so beyond the first two rows.

I tried using the demp and got the same results.  I think they are still there.

Many thanks for your efforts on our behalf.

I'm not sure I'm fully understanding your problem - but it sounds like the Mapping Step (step 2) is not "seeing" all the fields (columns) you expect it to see. This MAY BE caused by field delimiter or special character problems in your NOTES field (i.e it contains commas and / or quotes and its not properly delimited for CSV formatting). You might try importing a small set of records from ACT! WITHOUT the Notes field.

Well Sir, I followed your suggestion, and deleted the initial Note field from my data, and TA DA...It worked!

Simply amazing.  The data was read in and went to the second sreen where you have to map the fields, which previously wasn't being shown.  So although I have my work cut out for myself both cleaning up the source data, and refining the mapping, I think we're good to go.

Many, many thanks.  I'm sure I never would have thought of the possibity of a field of corrupt data.
