Error message when uploading file

Hello,
I created  a custom field in civi to upload a file but I get this error
Code: [Select]
rename(,/var/www/web38/web/files/civicrm/custom//) [<a href='function.rename'>function.rename</a>]: No such file or directory in /var/www/web38/web/sites/all/modules/civicrm/CRM/Core/BAO/File.php on line 115.But this is not a civi problem, the entire drupal site has problems right now with paths (file attachments etc just do not work but give no error message) I was hoping someone could tell me what this error means to civi and I could use it to fix the main problems?
