Where do I even start?
June 24, 2008, 08:24:39 pm
I don't want to sound lazy, but I thought I'd ask a few questions to see if anyone has any advice on where I should start.

I am planning to use civiCRM as a membership management for a local organization.  I have designed their website (www.eatsmartmovemoresc.org) using Wordpress.  I installed Drupal and civiCRM on the server (eatsmartmovemoresc.org/members), and I've been playing around with them, but I'm still unclear on how to make everything work together.

Basically I need to let 2 or 3 "admins" add new members, and access all the data.  I also want to be able to let new members sign up on the website using a regular form, and their information automatically be added to civiCRM.  Right now I'm not sure how to get the data from the form into the database.  Do new users actually have to use the civiCRM interface to sign up?  If this is the case, how do I limit what they can do within civiCRM so that they can only register and update their own information?

I'm sure I can find alot of answers by digging into the documentation and searching the forums for examples, but if any of you have any advice on where to start... it would be greatly appreciated!

Right now I'm not sure how to get the data from the form into the database.

You can create a custom form for sign up with the fields you want.  This info will go into the database, but they won't be added automatically as CiviCRM administrators.  See here: http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Linking+Profiles.

Nope - they can use the Drupal sign up, as explained above.

Hope that helps,
Michael

Thanks for the link!

Heres another question...
I set the permission in the Drupal Access Control for anonymous users to be able to access civiCRM and view profile listings and forms, but when I try to go to civicrm as an anonymous user, it asks me to log in and wont let me view anything.  Is there something else I have to do to allow access... or does the user have to go to a specific url?

Very few sites give "access CiviCRM" to anonymous users. In general, you want to limit them to using profile forms and listings, make online contributions, signup for memberships and register for events. More info on this here:
