Delayed receipt of replies

Hi,
   I am not sure whether this is a CiviSMTP issue or a CiviMail issue, but thought I'd start the post here.
Our office in Los Angeles sent out a mailing in May. Just yesterday, they received 3 "out of office" messages from people who were sent that mailing.

I have 2 questions:
1. What might be the reason(s) that these replies were so delayed?
2. We are concerned that other, non-automatic replies are also going astray. Is there a way we can test this?

We did have a blacklisting issue in early May that was resolved on May 13th, but the mailing went out on May 23rd.
