Page reloads and erases data after change "Contribution Type"
June 06, 2007, 03:50:40 pm
When I am adding a new contribution (manually) to a contact I have set up my "Contribution Types" to match our common check memo's.  This is a great feature of CiviCRM and allows to sort/search based on our different accounts within our organization.

When I am typing in information for a new (or editing an old one) contribution and change the "Contribution Type" the whole page re-loads and erases ALL the data I have entered in the various boxes below.  The fields are all the same but everything I've typed is gone (date, amount, etc.).

Why does the page re-load and is this a really useful feature or could something be done to save what we've entered already but still load the necessary changes?

Thanks,

The page reloads because custom fields can be configured to extend a particular contribution type - so we re-render the form, adding custom fields for that type (if any). This is not "ideal" behavior - we will be looking at Ajax-based solutions for this in 2.0.

However, for NEW contributions this is the first field on the form - and so we "assumed" that other data would not be entered yet.

When editing an existing contribution, the reload should (and doesn't in my testing) not "erase" any of the stored values. So the only way I can see to get into much trouble is if you modify the saved values on the form and then go back and change the Contribution Type before saving our other changes. Hopefully, this sequence of steps can be avoided "procedurally" for now.

I think you're right about procedurally preventing this.  I've let my teammates who enter contributions know about this so that they are aware.  We will change contribution type first for now.  I'll look forward to AJAX changes in 2.0.
