Is that possible using a CiviEvent not associated with a regular Drupal node? If not, is the recommended way to do this to automatically (using a custom module) create a matching CiviEvent item every time a Drupal node of a specific type is created, and then promote the corresponding Drupal node to the front page? Or, is there a way to add in CiviEvents to Drupal node listings, such as those for the front page, taxonomy term pages, etc.?

You could try to use the Front Page Drupal module (http://drupal.org/project/front) and redirect users to the page you want.
