Address min. requirements
April 24, 2007, 08:16:14 am
Does the address fields require a minimum amount of data? I am only capturing the Country at this point, but when I go to  do a search by Country, only contacts with full address (ie. street name and number, city, postal code, country) come up. Thanks for any suggestions.

Not sure how to reproduce this... demo?

Simple question I think.

Part of the info we are capturing from our Members is their COUNTRY. We also have some members where we have additional information regarding their Address (ie. street number, city, postal code etc.)

When we do an ADVANCED SEARCH for Members in a certain country; ONLY those whose address included street, city postal code etc comes up. None of the other Members who ONLY inputted their country comes up.

Is this any clearer?

mixxmedia,

 :)

By being asked to "reproduce on demo", you're asked to go to http://demo.civicrm.org/ and repeating the same steps that led you to problematic behaviour in your own install. This step allows us to eliminate potential of your installation having some problems specific only for itself.

If you manage to get the same erratic behaviour on our demo instance, there is second part: "file an issue" - which means going to http://issues.civicrm.org/ and creating a bug report with detailed description of the problem. This part of the process helps us to manage all the bug reports and address them in timely manner. We always ask our users to take part in the process by reporting bugs in the issue tracker - it helps us a lot.

So... Summarizing the above - the behaviour you described is basically a bug, which we will be more than happy to eliminate as soon as possible, but we kindly request your help by taking part in the process. Explaining the issue with capital letter words helps also, but will not drive the issue to happy end as quickly as "reproducing on demo and filing an issue".   ;) :D

Thanks,
michau

Sorry for not understanding the first request. I'd be more than happy to go through the demo to try and recreate the problem. Thanks for the 'hand-holding'.

Can you verify whether the Country is actually saved when you enter a contact whose address only has the "Country". In my testing - it looks like we don't save the Country value in that case - which would explain why your searches are not returning those contact records.

This "behavior" has been in place for a while - it was intended to prevent folks from unintentionally saving the "default" country for a contact where the address was actually unknown/not entered. If this is what you're seeing - the workaround is to enter a value in a least one other address field - you could enter "no address details" or something like that in the Street Address fields - for example. This should then ensure that the Country is saved and searchable.

Thanks Dave. Thought I was going wacko for a while. I now see why this '
behaviour' (as we spell it in Canada), is an issue. Why isn't the default set at blank like the other fields in the Address 'block'?

thanks again

We have a "Default Country" setting (Global Settings >> Localization) - which is intended to be an input convenience. I've filed an issue for 1.8 to change the "saving" behaviour :-)
