Access Denied windows update KB950759
June 26, 2008, 02:41:37 pm
We have had problems logging into CiviCRM from Drupal, on windows XP Home & Vista Business in the past couple of days.  After logging into Drupal we get the "Access Denied" page when logging following any of the CiviCRM links.  Coincidentally, all the people who have been having issues recently, in the last two days, ran windows updates.

After uninstalling the security update listed in KB950759, technically it's an IE7 update but the issues were occurring with IE7, FF3 & Safari for Windows, I was once again able to log in.

anyone else having this issue?

my set-up looks like this
Drupal 5.7
CiviCRM 2.0.0
PHP 5.1.6
MYSQL 5.0.22
Apache 2.2.3

2 machines
XP Home SP2
Vista Business (no SP yet)

Hm, very interesting. AFAIK nobody on the dev team runs Windows, so it’s a bit hard for us to reproduce, not to mention track this issue. :(

Can you see anything strange in the server logs during the time when you were running the updated version (and couldn’t login)?

Yea not using Windows is making it difficult for me to (insert IE/windows rant here).  But that said it is turning out the KB950759 thing is a red herring.  I can't find anything odd popping up in the logs (again not much of a windows guy.

I eneded up re-installing the update.  Though I did get the Access Denied screen the first time I logged back in.  Once I logged out and cleared the cookies that went a way.

I don't know if it helps any but when I get the Access Denied Drupal logs me out.  If I log back in the error is gone.  My client still has the error no matter how many times they log in/out, note on a machine with a ton of other issues (like malware, viruses, etc...)

Is it possible the issue is server related? I have had a bunch of annoying issues with the host, aiso.net.  I can provide a phpinfo dumb is you would like.

It’s a bit hard to say what-related this issue can be (especially that we can’t reproduce it and you can’t reliably either, if I got the above right).

Some Drupal login issues can be related to a multi-domain setup (if you have one); see the comments here and other Google search for Drupal cookie session results.

I can diff a phpinfo() dump against mine to see whether there aren’t any interesting differences there.

turned out to be the Drupal sessions table.  Once I cleared that all was well.

Things got out of whack in the first place because we changed the sites domain form a dev site to production.
