Longer-term request: integrate with Mailman

CiviMail is great, but having to send an email through the web interface is a bit of a pain.  I tend to prefer Mailman for mailing lists and I believe it has an API.
It would be great if CiviCRM could integrate with Mailman for mailing list management.  I imagine this working somehow like this:

* Creating a Smart group in CiviCRM allows the option of creating a mailing list in Mailman according to pre-set options (admin/moderator email address, password etc.)
* This mailing list is then created and the necessary people can then email to it however they like in their client of choice.
* [Somehow] CiviCRM monitors the group subscription, rebuilding it daily/hourly when new members are added that match the smart group criteria and checking for unsubscriptions

I admit my thoughts are still rather unclear but I wonder whether it would be a simpler way of doing mailings than currently?

Integration with a discussion list tool like Mailman or Sympa has come up a number of times. This would probably need to be a community contributed project.

Hi,

I run a cron to sync my mailman list each day as described here http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,3335.0.html. Currently I have it setup so that there is a custom field for each list and a user can select if they want it from their profile.

And integration with sympa is "simple":
you can on sympa define a query to run to fetch the members of the list.
I haven't done anything but something specific on the queries, but that's rather simple once you figured out the query using phpmyadmin or another sql gui.
