Having some problems using CiviMail.

I go through all of the steps to setting up a mailing and receive no error messages but no mail gets sent. (If I choose not to send a test mailing).  I even tried to manually run the civicrm.cronjob.php, I receive no error messages however no emails were sent.

If I choose to send a test mailing I get the following error message at the test step:
The test mailing could not be delivered due to the following error:
      Validation failed for: "CiviCRM Test Mailer (name)"

The strange part about my tests is that sometimes I will receive a test mailing when I'm setting up a mailing.  However, when I actually send the job itself no email ever gets sent.

Anyone have of had similar problems with CiviMail before?  Are there any logs that I can check?  Any files that I should look into?

All suggestions are welcome, because I have no error messages or probable cause to pursue after.

By the way I'm using CiviCRM 1.7.9379 (Yes I know....).  Upgrading at the moment is not an option so please bare with me.
