Tax Receips in CiviCRM
July 07, 2008, 07:57:16 am
I installed CiviCRM on Drupal, this software is really interesting and I am working hard with this.

I read many posts, documentation, etc about Tax Receipts, does anyone can suggest me something to let me send tax receipts?

I need to do this as Canadian charitable organization which requires a government code for every single receipt.

Do you have any suggestions? I know this is a missing feature but I would like to try to activate this..

cheers

I'd be interested in this one also.

Chances are that no one has done this for CiviCRM, but it could be done with a custom template (in combination with a custom field?).

To do this though, we'd need a complete requirements spec. - do you have one handy?

I'm not sure of the situation in Canada, but in Australia we also need to send 'Tax Receipts'.  Loosely defined, a Tax Receipt must include at least the following...

  • Include the words "Tax Receipt or Tax Invoice"
  • the Business Number of the company providing the receipt (or invoice)
  • the receipt/invoice number
  • and the amount of tax for each separate item as well as a total - in our case Goods and Service Tax, in your case I suspect it's called VAT (value added tax?)

If a receipt only has 1 item then we are able to simply add the words 'GST Inc.' next to the amount for it to qualify as a tax receipt under the relevant legislation.

E.g. this would be OK...

Tax Invoice     ACME Supplies (ABN: 1234 567 890)

Invoice No. 1235
Date: 30/7/08

Contribution:    $10 (GST Inc.)
------------------------------
Total:             $10 (GST Inc.)
------------------------------

This isn't a perfect solution - but if the situation in Canada is similar, perhaps you could edit the template for contribution receipts (templates/CRM/Contribute/Form/Message.tpl) so that it includes all the necessary information to qualify as a 'Tax Receipt'.

I think that the main thing that's different in Canada is the need to have unique serial numbers on the receipts.  BTW, in Canada (like Australia) we call it GST, but there's no GST applicable on charitable donations, which is I think what most people are interested in using this for.

We should consider doing some kind of bounty on this, because it's a feature that is holding back CiviCRM adoption in Canada, I fear.

Here's the information that could be considered a basic requirements spec:

Note that you can always use contribution id which is an auto increment field in mysql and which is always increasing as your sequence number

I've started a wiki page to develop ideas in this area particularly for Canada at: http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/Canadian+Charitable+Receipts

Please continue discussion there.
