Report Tool Alternatives

I'm exploring how to do custom reports for our civicrm site. BRIT isn't presently an option for us, as our hosting provider doesn't have a Java-based offering.

I know I can create a custom query and use different templates/pages within civicrm for formatting, but I'm hoping to find something a little less manual-intensive. Being new to the PHP world, I was actually a little surprised not to find a plethora of PHP-based reporting tools; the only open-source/free one I've run across so far is SpoolTemplate. There is also the commercial PHPReports offering.

What do other civicrm users without Java access use to design custom reports?

What type of report do you need ?

Between adding custom templates on existing features and working on specific queries (eg. you can add "force=1" on a search query), I've been able to generate quite a few "reports" without having to touch php.

(beside, custom searches aren't that labour intensive, but yes, I'd like to have a simpler reporting tool too.

Have a look at the reporting tool of vtiger (might be taken from sugarcrm), would it be something like that you're looking for ?

If you a Joomla user you should look at Logos Query Manager (http://gmitc.biz/). It's real good!
