Data Security and Events questions
June 07, 2007, 11:39:10 pm
Hi all

I am new to civiCRM but it looks like a wonderful app. Kudos already to the team, because my research shows this system has great potential. Strangely, having never needed it, I now how two clients at once asking for it. So... a few questions if I may...

I have researched on civicrm.org site and run all through the demo site (impressive!), but questions remain:

1. SECURITY
Are there any special precautions, beyond normal Joomla ones on the security checklist [http://help.joomla.org/component/option,com_easyfaq/task,view/id,167/Itemid,268/]
that I can apply to civiCRM? I'm a little bit nervous about keeping all that personal information in a database/system whose security I cannot guarantee. A colleague suggests I should not use civiCRM for this much sensitive data, because it should be behind a firewall. This is beyond my expertise - I need other advice/help please.

2. EVENTS
For one organisation, I want to be able to run event registrations. I've experimented on the demo system with adding extra fields to the Event Registration page, to no avail. The only extra groups that come up are the ones relating to Individual/Household...etc, not the one I set up relating to 'Events'. I'm sure there's an easy answer to this, but I cant find it

3. CALL FOR PAPERS
Dont suppose anyone knows any hook-in modules for 'Papers Management' for conferences? I found one on Joomla extensions:
http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/link_id,1203/Itemid,35/
but it's a bit pricey. I am considering just giving them DocMan (or similar) and a custom table application to handle the submission process.

Hopefully someone here can help me.

Thanks in advance
Dex

Hi - Thx for the nice feedback...

Regarding 1. Security...
Securing online DB's is a complex issue. You can find some pointers and discussion here:
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Security+Considerations

... but you'll need to evaluate the trade-offs and either bring in a security consultant or educate yourself further.

Regarding 2. Events...
If you are trying to add custom fields which are ABOUT a person's "participation" in an event (the most common use case) - your need to set "Used for" in custom field group to "Participant". Then create your field(s) - example might be "Meal Preference - Vegan, Kosher, Omnivore". Then put your field(s) in a Profile and link that profile to your event. If this isn't what your trying to do - perhaps you can detail out your requirements and what you tried.

Don't have info on Papers Management...

Hi Dave

Thanks very much for your helpful comments. Will investigate your link and others on security.

Re extra events fields, yes that's exactly what I was trying to do - thanks. I knew I was missing something there. :]
