Credit Card Processing - Recurring Billing
July 08, 2008, 12:34:52 pm
I am interested in opening a discussion with CiviCRM users regarding credit card recurring/membership billing features some people have been inquiring about.

Caledon Card Services is a merchant account provider and gateway payment processor based in
Georgetown, ON, Canada. We have been in business for over 25 years providing merchants with the ability to safely and securely authorize and settle credit card transactions through retail, mail order/telephone order and e-commerce businesses. We have recently upgraded our recurring billing system to reflect our standing as one of the most pro-active PCI (payment card industry) compliant processors in North America.

Traditionally, advocacy and non-profit groups have not had the resources to spend thousands of dollars in upgraded security hardware/software in order to comply with ever increasing credit card company security compliance standards. With Caledon's recurring payment system, these groups are able to process all card types on a one-time or recurring cycle without the liability of storing the sensitive credit card data. All data is stored in our PCI compliant environment, essentially removing the majority of the liability from the merchant.

Please feel free to post or email any questions you may have. We currently process for a number of non-profits and associations and would be more than happy to discuss your organizations unique requirements.

Best Regards,

Marcus

Though this thread was initiated about one year ago, it is precisely the topic in which I am interested.

I'll contact the business above and ask that they post the answer to my question in this forum.

My question is which credit card payment processors (possibly from those in Canada) integrate with civiCRM?  The non-profit organization for which I do the bookkeeping is interested in switching from our current merchant credit card service provider.

My real question is who is the least expensive credit card payment (donations) processor that is integrated with civiCRM.  I would like our members and donors to be able to go to the donate page of our website to enter their own name, address, credit card #, expiry date, etc and once the donation is processed, the donation and donor's information is automatically updated in civiCRM / civiContribute.  We have both monthly recurring donations as well as one-time donations.

So far I have found that IATS (owned by TicketMaster) can do this for $16/mo + $0.46/transaction + 2.45% commission on VISA & MC.  If you know of a  cheaper alternative, please reply.  Thanks.

From a survey in NZ it is not possible to say 'who is the cheapest' as it will depend on the volume and size of transactions across various periods eg month/year. good luck. hope you get some good info from other N. Am. users

There are only very limited options in CiviCRM for recurring donations so you will need to pick a processor that supports that or pay to get one developed.

Last I looked only Paypal was able to process recurring contributions.

I note that there might be IATS integration in the latest version but I am not sure whether it is coded for recurring transations.

Who is the cheapest is a less accurate phrase than what I had intended.

I suppose I would like to see a comparison table with column headings that would record: Payment Processor, credit card volume, % commission, monthly fee, fee per transaction, integration with civiCRM?, etc.

Shopping around for the best value seems to take more time that I have and definitely has been done many many times by others in the same position.

would be great for you to step up and start work on the comparison table (do a search first to see what information you can glean from the web)

we are not aware of any comparison and this has not come up on forums. However i think quite a few folks would like to see it and wish that someone would do it :) So someone starting it would be a good first step

In Canada, I've use three payment processors, and they all support recurring billing: Paypal [but only the simple one, not pro - which means it bounces them to a separate paypal page], IATS and Moneris.

IATS is cheaper and easier because you don't need a merchant account, but it requires you to be a non-profit.

Moneris is the industrial strength solution ...

Caledon Card Services is a private Canadian payment processor and merchant account provider. We have actually built a plug-in to CiviCRM in the hopes of gaining some more ground in the not for profit/association realm. Secure, PCI Compliant recurring billing is also supported via a tokenization method whereby the credit card details are stored on our secure servers, allowing clients to setup a schedule for billing to occur automatically given the chosen interval (weekly, monthly etc.)

Although obviously I have a conflict of interest here, I'd like to point out that IATS is essentially TicketMaster and Moneris is a joint venture wholly owned by Royal Bank and Bank of Montreal.

Caledon Card Services currently supports over 50,000 merchants in North America, 95% of those being small private businesses and non-profit associations. Because we are a small business ourselves, we better understand the needs of our small business clients. If you are interested in our CiviCRM plug-in, recurring billing, online merchant accounts etc., I urge you to contact us today so that we can explain the many beenfits to dealing with a private credit card processing company who has been in business for over 26 years.

Hey Marcus:

Well, a little self-promotion is acceptable, but you're confusing me.

You say you have a civicrm plug-in, but I don't see it anywhere - what is it called, and which version is it available in?

Also, since we're doing comparisons, what are your rates?
