One member renew registration for multiple members?
July 15, 2008, 05:01:40 pm
I've seen how in v2.1 that users will be able to register multiple users for events.  What about for member registration?

Basically, I'm looking in to using this for a trade organization.  This organization has different levels of registration for its members, who are individuals that are owners/co-owners/employees of small businesses.  Usually, the owner of the business will pay the membership renewal fees for himself and his employees.  The event feature (in 1.2) looks like it will work perfectly for when these members attend a conference (the owner registering/paying for himself and the other members) - but is this planned for actual membership registration/renewal?

I see how you can do relationships for organizations/employees/etc, which I think looks like it will work nicely, but in our case, the organization (business) will not pay a registration fee, just the owner/employees - does CiviCRM seem like it might be a decent fit?

I'm sure I'll have other questions, but trying to research before bothering anyone!

Thanks,
Nathan

Nate - You may be able to meet your use cases for membership with another new 2.1 feature - individuals can sign up and renew memberships "On Behalf of" an Organization.

Check out part 2 of this blog post for some info: http://civicrm.org/node/352 (and you can follow the links to detailed specs).

You would  use that feature, in combination with the existing feature that a Membership type can automatically "extend" to cover "Employees of" an Organization.

If you need "self-service" entry of the employees for the organization - you'll also need to use the ability to include a "Current Employer" field in CiviCRM Profile forms. The one drawback w/ this solution is that the employer (organization) name needs to be entered in exactly the same way for each employee in order for the "relationship" to be made to the "correct" organization.

Dave,

Thanks for the response.  It doesn't appear that will work in this situation.  In this organization, the companies are not technically the members, the employees/owners would be the members.  One company might have two members, and they both might have different "levels" of membership.  I wish I could get the organization to change their membership structure, but that's not even an option!  :)

I'm definently going to test out CiviCRM for them when the next version comes out.  Even if I can't get it working for renewal of memberships, using it for mailings and event sign up alone might be worth it, as I have found no cheap, self-hostable solution for event registration that comes close to the features I need.

Thanks for the info, and I look forward to the new version.

Nathan
