Try to import contacts and it says it is successful, but no contacts are added
July 22, 2008, 10:16:32 am
I've seen this problem posted a lot, and have yet to find a solution.

I recently tried this solution from lobo:

I looked into this and fixed it for 2.0. This bug is filed and fixed here:

http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-3112?page=com.atlassian.jira.ext.fisheye:fisheye-issuepanel

you only need the change to Preview.tpl

lobo

I've been having this problem on my Drupal 5.7, CiviCRM 2.0 installation.  And I tried the fix here that Lobo posted, but that just made my preview page blank.  It had all my theme, but no preview of the data or option to add them to a group or anything.

I have been able to import contacts on this site before.  So I'm not sure why it isn't working for this set of data.  I'm trying to import a lot of organizations.  I started out with over a thousand records, but when that didn't work I stripped the data and made a dataset with only 15 records and it still won't import.  I stripped out all the columns I wasn't going to import.  There are some custom fields I'm trying to import, and I'm using a saved field mapping.  I'm also trying to add the contacts to a group and give them all the same tag.  But none of this is working.

Please help!  This is taking me way longer than it should!
Thanks,
Jen

I don't have any suggestions for you, but I feel your pain.

Import in CiviCRM needs some SERIOUS TLC.  At first glance it looks like it's going to be easy to get all of your contacts and data into Civi, but when you actually try to use it, it just doesn't work the way it's supposed to.

I have been able to import contacts, but have not been able to update existing contacts via Import under any scenario I've tried. Extremely frustrating.

I would suggest, at least, that you include ALL data you are going to want with your contacts in the initial file, because if you do get it imported, and then decide to update more fields later, it probably won't happen.  I had to delete my entire contact list and re-import with everything in one file.

In general we prefer that folks reproduce their issue on our demo / sandbox server. This helps us isolate and fix the issue. I'm not sure what jen's issue is (i dont think she's reproduced it on our machines). There are too many variations with deployments that we do not control.

I think we do agree that import needs to be improved and made more flexible etc. However, unless folks step up and start working towards it / reproduce and file bug reports there is not a lot we can do about it. As an open source project, CiviCRM is at a stage where the project needs more SERIOUS contributors (development, documentation, usability, testing, issue specs etc).

Just to clarify, I was offering sympathy to a fellow user, being that I am currently struggling with similar problems.  My post wasn't directed in any way at the developers of CiviCRM.  It is what it is, and it looks like Import is working significantly better in 2.1, so it probably has received some serious love from the development team.

For the record, I did reproduce my own error on the demo install and filed a bug... I'm not just on here complaining.  And I'm a developer as well, so I understand all of the difficulties that go with that.

Thanks for all you do

Re: Try to import contacts and it says it is successful, but no contacts are added

An update:
I tried importing on the sandbox, and on my site.  I can import all the default values that come with the CiviCRM Organization.  It dies after importing 50, and I have to keep doing it over and over and over again to get them all in, but I get them all in.  The problem is that I have about 5 custom fields I'd like to import.  I can't test those on the sandbox site, as far as I know.  And I also can't get them imported on my site.  I am getting the problem where it says it has run the import successfullly, but it doesn't actually update or tag the contacts.

So, as I stated before I've gotten all of the default organization values in, and I am trying to fill the custom fields of those organizations with a new import, and that is where I'm running in to problems.  I've tried doing this with an update and fill and neither is successful.

Is this a known problem?  Is there a fix you can point me to?  Is there any way to import custom fields?

Just so you know I'm running CiviCRM 2.0.5 on Drupal 5.7

Please let me know if you can shed any light.

Thanks!

I'm not aware of a known issue w/ importing custom fields in 2.0.5.

You can test your import custom fields on the sandbox...
* Add some or all of them via Administer CiviCRM
* Go to Import and "map them" and do your import. Save the import mapping so we can see what you're doing (and take a screen shot of the field mapping as well in case the sandbox gets reset). Try just 1 or 2 records to see if the problem recreates and report back here.

I'm having this same problem. I wanted to test on the sandbox but I can only find the 2.1 sandbox.

I'm running Drupal 5.10 and CiviCRM 2.0.6. Everything works fine as long as I don't use custom fields...

I'll set up a sandbox test if you can send me to a 2.0.6 sandbox.

I was able to import all the custom fields if they were text fields.  If they were radio buttons, drop-down, or multi-select it didn't go through.  I think that is because its expecting something like 0 or 1 instead of Yes or No.  There should probably be more instructions on that.  I've actually had a similar problem with radio button or drop-down fields with Drupal's Node Import module too.

Can you please try it on our 2.1 demo machines. If reproducible and the bug is critical, we will do a backport to 2.0.x. We hope to make 2.1 the main supported release in a few weeks and all our efforts are on that release currently.

It may be worthwhile reverse engineering. I.e. set up one or several contacts with all the custom data fields filled in (with the various options if necessary).

Then export the contacts with that data.

That way you will be sure that the data-type you are trying to import matches what you have set your system up to use. It may help.  :)
