Error on editing event registration in IE 6
July 30, 2008, 03:56:26 pm
I can access this url in the sandbox with firefox but get an error in IE 6 - see attached. There are two ways to get to try to edit the event registration (from viewing the event registration - nice addition btw - and from the  and directly from the event summary screen. The links are slightly different but both give an error (hence the url in the attached picture is slightly different to the one listed below)

Eileen - does this error occur with IE 7 as well? We are using AJAX to dynamically load the event-specific part of the screen - so might be a problem specific to IE6? Also, does this error occur when entering a new event registration for a contact, or just when editing an existing registration?

Hmmm - I don't use any machines with IE 7 anymore. I can't remember what I hated about it.

I can create new events but when I go to edit them I get the error

I've been grappling with this one too - but not in CiviCRM.

Basically it is a bug in IE 5.5 but Microsoft couldn't be bothered to fix it so stuck it in IE6 as well. Just to make their software consistant they also stuck it in IE7. Get firefox!!!

See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/927917 which states:

Quote
This problem occurs because a child container HTML element contains script code that tries to modify the parent container element of the child container. The script code tries to modify the parent container element by using either the innerHTML method or the appendChild method.

If anyone can shed some light on how you go about debugging this in IE then I'd love to hear. Since the bug is not always consistent and when it does occur you get kicked out it seems hard to track exactly where it is coming from.

I've used grep to isolate which javascript uses these methods but have found it hard to identify the specific lines to modify.

Eileen:

We tested this form on IE6.0 and IE7, it worked fine. Any more clues/ steps to replicate this problem..

Really - I get it completely consistantly. I'm running IE 6 SP2 & I can't edit any event registrations. I created the simplest event possible (not payment or anything) and still couldn't go back into the event & edit it.

It doesn't matter whether I choose yes or no to those annoying "this page contains secure & non-secure items. Do you want to display the non-secure items)" - Actually that just happens because if you use the quick-links to recently edited contacts you flit back & forth between http & https

I don't get it when trying to edit contributions but I get a windows style pop-up "Calendar Setup: Nothing to set up (no fields found) please check your code"

I'll try my work PC & disabling all my IE add-ins & let you know

Nope - same deal from the work PC (although it does also run XPSP 2 & IE 6 SP2 so no great surprise). I can't get to edit event registrations at all through IE6 (needless to say I have no problems with Firefox).

Disabling IE addins didn't help.

I seem to constantly bob backwards and forwards between http & https as I use the sandbox

Kurund - Can you have our IE testers post the exact versions of IE and Windows we tested with?

Other folks - if you're running IE6 or IE7 it would be awesome if you could try editing an event registration on the sandbox and let us know your results. You can test with this URL:
http://sandbox.civicrm.org/civicrm/contact/view/participant?reset=1&action=update&id=47&cid=70&context=dashboard

Something has changed with this - I still get the error but now I can click 'OK' and the page appears to finish loading and I can continue.

Is no-one else getting this problem?

FYI, I just had some complaints from a client about this in v2.0

I turned on "force SSL" on the v2.1 sandbox and tested it, and it appears to be fixed. No secure/non-secure popups.

Hi - the ssl message wasn't the main error - the main error was the operation aborted one. On my site I don't have an ssl cert to test if changing this setting helps with the operation aborted error

I was thinking that the problems may be related -- even if you tell IE you want to view secure/non-secure items when that popup appears, perhaps it doesn't completely load the page or loads it correctly as a result of the security interruption.

You can fix that setting in IE through Tools > Internet Options > Security > Custom Level > Display mixed content > enable

Yes - that is the version of IE I have.  It seems consistent with speleo's post. Since the problem is in a backend screen it's not a show-stopper as normal website users won't hit it (and administrators can be asked to use another browser)

Eileen:

I don't use windows, but i guess IE6 SP3 is available, so may be you can update IE or Windows Update might solve your problem.
