Sign up for a Group and Membership status at the same time
August 06, 2008, 05:33:17 pm
I have set up many different user groups with my civicrm (set up by state) and I want an individual to be able to sign up for the appropriate group when they sign up for civi membership. How do I do this?

Lots of ways to do this ...

If user groups are solely by state, one approach would be to just make sure a collect the person's State (address) by including that field in a Profile (possibly along w/ other address info) and using that profile in your online membership signup / contribution page.

Then you can create Smart Groups:
* All contacts w/ XXX Membership and primary address in YY State
* All contacts w/ XXX Membership and primary address in ZZ State

This works well if you have members in a limited number of states (altho you can certainly create 50 smart groups).
Alternatively, you can create a static group for each state and include the "Groups()" field in your Profile. But this gives them a checkbox for each group - so if 50 states, might be a bit awkward.

My favorite method for allowing individuals to manage their own group memberships is to create a custom field, lets say "State Newsletter". Then create a smart group based on a search of that field.

For example, I might register on the site and select CA from the drop down of the state newsletter field. Now I'm automatically part of the Statenewsletter=CA group. If I want to change latter, I just edit the value of that field in my profile.
