SMTP Errors - Need help with Set Up --- RESOLVED
August 07, 2008, 01:23:46 pm
Hi,

I'm having problems getting SMTP to work and could do with some help. I'd be grateful if anyone could look at the settings below and see if I'm missing anything. The error message is towards the bottom

I'm using CiviCRM 2.0.4 - Drupal - PHP5

I've followed all of the instruction on the UAS Coop page in relation to set up
https://civismtp.uas.coop/drupal/node/1

I've completed all the settings on UAS and tested it to get green light on everything.

  • Civimail User Check : successfully authenticated.
  • SMTP Authorization Check : SMTP Authorization Succeeded! This proves that the SMTP server is up and that the SMTP Authorization is working with the SMTP username and SMTP password you have entered.
  • Email Domain Check : The MX records for mail.mysite.com are correctly configured
  • SMTP Account settings updated for New Account

Mxrecords

I've set up a subdomain called mail.mysite.com and set the UAS mx records for it to:

# civismtp.uas.coop
# civismtp3.uas.coop

I've set up a pop account called info@mail.mysite.com

In "Domain Information block" I've applied the following setting.

  • Name - mysite.com
  • Description - my site
  • Contact Name - My Name
  • FROM Email Address - info@mail.mysite.com
  • Email Domain - mail.mysite.com
  • Return-Path - info@mail.mysite.com

IN CiviCRM SMTP Settings

SMTP Server - civismtp.uas.coop
SMTP Port -  20095
Authentication? - yes
SMTP username - My UAS username
SMTP password - My Uas password

When I submit an event registration I get the following error:

Sorry. A non-recoverable error has occurred.

A fatal error occurred when CiviCRM attempted to send an email (via SMTP). If you received this error after submitted on online contribution or event registration - the transaction was completed, but we were unable to send the email receipt.

This is probably related to a problem in your Outbound Email Settings (Administer CiviCRM » Global Settings » Outbound Email). Possible causes are:

    * Your SMTP Username or Password are incorrect.
    * Your SMTP Server (machine) name is incorrect.
    * You need to use an Port other than the default port 25 in your environment.
    * Your SMTP server is just not responding right now (it is down for some reason).

Check this page for more information.

The mail library returned the following error message: Failed to connect to civismtp.uas.coop:20095 [SMTP: Failed to connect socket: Connection timed out (code: -1, response: )]

An update for anyone who may experience the same errors.

The SMTP port (20095) is non-standard and therefore blocked by our hosts firewall. They added an exception and it works now.

Incidentally, I got no response from UAS COOP, is this still supported here?

what do you mean by:

"Incidentally, I got no response from UAS COOP, is this still supported here?"

if you called UAS on the phone, that is probably why.  There is no phone support for this service.

if u are not referring to a phone call,  to what r u referring?

Hi Shane,

As in on this forum? I'm GMT so that would explain what seemed like a delay.

I also emailed you on August 6th with similar query... and got no response..

I'm just wondering what the correct support channels are? Now that it's working it seems pretty smooth but I haven't sent any bulk mailings yet..

Looking forward to trying it out..

Hi.

I'm having the same problem.

I wrote to my host support to allow an exception and am being told by my them that I am being hosted on a shared server platform, as such they will not be able to make any changes to our server configurations.  If I require control over port access, you will need to investigate using a dedicated server solution.

Is there any way around this?  The whole CiviSMTP service is a way for me of avoiding the expense and complication of using a dedicated server...

Thanks,
VS.

Actually, scrub that - it's turned out to be something else, which I've since sorted.

With thanks,
VS.
