Right for project with events that are open, invite only, or application only?

CiviCRM looks quite impressive indeed.  I'm trying to figure out if it would be right for my project.  Since my host is still using an older version of php, I want to get an idea before I'd switch hosts.  We want to create a framework on our site as follows:

- any registered user on the site can create an event.
- when creating an event, the creator of the event can designate the event as one of three things: open to all, application only (users need to send an application to the session organizer, and be accepted, to participate), or invitation only (users need an invitation from the session creator in order to participate).
- we want the ability to associate custom fields with an event, which better describe the event, and which would be searchable/sortable
- The page for an event should display an attendance list, showing the info of all users who have already signed up up for the session, so that all site users can determine what roles are needed, and whether the session interests them.

Thanks for any help/guidance anyone can provide.

Evan

In it's current state, CiviEvent is missing a number of the features you've listed. There's been discussion of "moderated" and "by invite" events by some users - but no one has stepped up to work on this yet as far as I know.

Custom field functionality is available and robust. implementing a "front-end" search will require some coding - currently there is only listings (HTML, RSS, iCal formats) - but should be pretty easy to do.

There is basic Participant Listing functionality - but you would have to extend the code to include fields beyond Name and Email.
